Formerly known as Pegu, Bago, a 2-hr diver and 80km to the north west of Yangon, was the capital of the Mon Kingdom of Lower Myanmar in the 15th century. Sightseeing in Bago includes the beautiful 55-meter long reclining Buddha, Shwethalyaung and the Mon style Shwemawdaw Pagoda, one of the most venerated in Myanmar. Its spire stands 114m high and is even taller than the Shwedagon Pagoda. Visit also the old Palace "Kambozathadi" and the huge 4 sitting Buddha's "Kyaikpun". End the tour of Bago with a walk around the colourful Bago Market. On the way back to Yangon, visit the Allied War Cemetery near Htaukkyan, the final resting place for over 27,000 allied soldiers.

After breakfast, transfer to the jetty on Strand Road and board a public ferry for a short ride across Yangon River. On the other side, hop into a local jeep and continue on a scenic drive to Twante, offering a glimpse of life in the countryside outside the capital. Arrive in Twante, a small village specialized in traditional pottery. By horse and carriage we cross the village including the local market and a ceramics making area where more then twenty family workshops produce ceramic pots using centuries old methods. Full day trip from Bagan to Mount Popa, an extinct volcano with a height of 1518 m, about 48 km south east of Bagan. Mount Popa has played and important role in Myanmar culture, religion and history since earliest times. Its shrine is dedicated to the worship of the 37 Nats, the Burmese ancient animist spirits. The view over the Myingyan Plain from the top of the Popa-Taung Kalat volcanic peak is impressive (the climb is optional !). Lunch at the restaurant of Mt Popa Resort. Continue in direction of Salay, known today as an important centre of Buddhism with many living monasteries. Throughout its past, Salay created its own unique style of Bagan era architecture and you can see one of the nicest and oldest wooden monastery halls at Yok Sone Kyaung monastery. Transfer back to Bagan in the afternoon.

Kakku is a hidden treasure 46km south of Taunggyi with a magnificent collection of centuries old Buddhist stupas. More then 2,000 stupas have been built here in a small area of just one square kilometre, surrounded by mountains and trees. Until very recently this area, which is inhabited by the colourful Pa-O tribes with their distinctive habits, was closed to visitors. A full day excursion starts from your hotel, followed by a two-hour drive from Nyaung Shwe, via the capital of Shan State, Taunggyi. A Pa O guide leads a tour around the area and introduces the customs and life of the Pa O people in the villages. At the end of the day transfer back to hotel by road and boat.
